Holcim invests in 44.01: carbon mineralization near cement production

Holcim announced an investment in 44.01 on 4 November 2026 to advance geological carbon mineralization. The technology injects captured CO₂ into reactive ultramafic rock, where it converts into stable carbonate minerals. Since July, the companies have operated a pilot under industrial conditions at Holcim’s Fujairah cement plant in the UAE, with captured CO₂ stored underground. For cement engineers, the key implication is that suitable local geology could enable carbon storage closer to production, including inland plants with limited offshore storage access. Site-specific geological characterization, monitoring and integration with CO₂ capture remain essential considerations. Source: Holcim, 4 November 2026.
