Use and scope
Use this sheet during a shift handover or first response to an observed kiln symptom. Record observations before choosing a cause. Follow the site’s permit, isolation, emergency, environmental and OEM procedures. This sheet does not replace an interlock, alarm response, inspection standard, or maintenance instruction.

First-response checklist
- Confirm people, access, isolation and permit conditions before approaching equipment.
- Confirm whether an alarm, interlock, emergency procedure or operating limit requires escalation. Do not bypass a protection.
- Confirm the equipment identity, operating mode and observation time. Separate a current observation from a historical note.
- Record the instrument name, value, unit and timestamp. Mark a value as unavailable when its unit or sensor status is unknown.
- Check for visible changes that the site procedure permits: unusual noise or vibration, leakage, seal condition, dust or smoke, refractory or shell hot-spot indication, material flow, and lubrication observations.
- Compare the observation with the approved site/OEM reference. Record the reference used; do not substitute a generic threshold.
- Assign one next action: monitor and recheck, request maintenance inspection, request process review, or escalate immediately. Name the owner and handover time.
Decision tree
A. Is there an immediate safety, environmental, fire, structural or interlock concern?
- Yes → stop this diagnostic flow and follow the site emergency/escalation procedure.
- No or unknown → continue only within the approved access and operating procedure.
B. Is the observation reproducible and time-stamped?
- No → collect a safe repeat observation or mark the case inconclusive; do not infer a trend.
- Yes → continue.
C. Does the evidence point first to mechanical, thermal/refractory, sealing/draft, material-flow, instrumentation, or process-control conditions?
- Mechanical → request the approved mechanical inspection and record the suspected component.
- Thermal/refractory → request the approved thermal/refractory inspection and record the location and observation method.
- Sealing/draft → request the approved sealing/draft checks and record fan/draft evidence with units.
- Material-flow/process → request the approved process review and record feed/fuel/material context.
- Instrumentation → verify sensor identity, calibration/status and units before interpreting the value.
- Mixed or unknown → keep the case open, list competing explanations and escalate for engineering review.

Worked qualitative example
A handover reports a shell hot-spot observation but gives no sensor unit, timestamp or equipment location. The correct result is inconclusive, not a temperature judgment: confirm the equipment and location, record the measurement method and unit, check the approved refractory/shell procedure, and escalate if the site procedure identifies an urgent condition. The checklist does not invent a threshold.
